A Parting Word

Commandment 8

What to do:  ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD IN THE HABIT OF CHECKING ON HIS OWN COMMUNICATION SKILLS.

Why:  The aim of all education is to get our children gradually to take on more responsibility for themselves until they become independent.

How:  Expect him to proof-read all his assignments for language errors.  We tell him at school that everything which is to be read by someone else should be proof-read, so that would include his letters, too.  A dictionary (2) should be at his elbow during proof-reading.

A quiet place of his own to work in and rather regular hours for study help set up good habits of work and self-examination.

A little kidding can often help eliminate a pet expression not quite acceptable in ordinary speech.  Help him develop a memory aid he can use himself.

Charts that show growth in spelling strength, improvement of penmanship can be incentives.

Discourage him from letting you decide whether something is good enough.  When he asks “Is this all right?”, turn the question back to him by asking “Are you satisfied with it?..Is it the best you can do?”

If he wants to compete with somebody, let him do the picking.  Don’t compare him with any other one in the family or his class.  Show him you expect him to work up to his capacity, not that of anyone else.
