A Parting Word

Commandment 7

What to do:  BE THE BEST MODEL YOU CAN—IN MANNERS, INTERESTS, AND GOOD USE OF LANGUAGE.

Why:  Nothing is more clear than that children are natural mimics.  They will do as you do, no matter what you tell them.  They will absorb your attitudes towards people and experience.  Setting the example is item number one in the parent’s contract.

How:  Even though you may be past the age for twisting, keep out of that rut.  Keep your own interests up (2) (3) so that your children would rather talk with you than any other adult they know.

Watch your own language—not self consciously –to see whether you are saying what you mean, keeping a growing vocabulary, avoiding the over use of a few pet phrases. (2)

Read, write, converse and be seen doing specific things which require communication skills.

Be positive.  Look for the good signs.  Praise your children when they deserve it.  If you see something developing in a child which worries you, work on the cause rather than complain to the child about it.  If it gets too big for you, get some help.
