What to do:  MAKE TELEVISION WORK FOR YOUR CHILDREN AND FAMILY LIFE.

Why:  Big listening surrounds TV.  For all its mixed blessings, television is the outstanding invention in communications in our generation.  It may turn out to be the single greatest influence (2) on the values of your children, and their habits of thinking, listening and speaking.  It’s here to stay, and you must find ways of putting it on your side in the business of raising of family.

How:  Study children’s programs (2) together—and if possible with the parents of children your children pal with.  If you make agreements together, then the kids can’t protest that “All the other kids can listen to that.”

TV programs are rated in Parents Magazine and others—all available at the Public Library.  Teacher’s frequently recommend programs which enrich school studies.  Choices must interest the child, however.  Choices should result from mutual decisions.  Be patient but hang on to adult rights.  Variety, age, bed-time, studies, quantity, quality should all play parts in laying out the listening program.

Try to see particularly good shows together so that family discussions on them are possible later.

Use good programs as springboards for encouraging further reading, writing, conversation, development of interests.
